Who I am

KB Chess is a chess coaching service run by Kurtis Buck, a sole trader based in London, UK (“KB Chess”, “I”, “me”). I'm responsible for the personal information described here (the “data controller”).

What I collect

  • Contact details: your name, email address and phone number, when you sign up for free lessons, fill in a form (including forms on Facebook or Instagram ads) or message me on WhatsApp.
  • Chess information: your rating, usernames on sites like Chess.com or Lichess, games you send me, and what you want to improve.
  • Lesson information: notes on your progress and homework, and lesson recordings only if you agree to a lesson being recorded.
  • Payment information: handled by the payment provider you pay through. I see confirmation that you've paid, not your full card details.

How I use it

  • To reply to your enquiry and send what you asked for, such as a free game analysis.
  • To give you access to the free lessons and send related chess emails.
  • To arrange, deliver and follow up on coaching sessions.
  • To take payment and keep business and tax records.
  • To follow up once or twice about coaching after you enquire.

My legal bases under UK GDPR are: your consent (free-lesson emails, which you can unsubscribe from at any time using the link in every email); taking steps you've asked for before a contract, then delivering that contract (coaching); my legitimate interest in following up on enquiries; and legal obligations (tax records). I never sell your information.

Who I share it with

Only the services needed to run the business:

  • Kit (kit.com), which stores free-lesson sign-ups and sends those emails
  • Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), if you contact me or fill in a form through them
  • Vercel, which hosts this website and counts visits
  • Microsoft Clarity, which shows how visitors use the site (only if you accept cookies)
  • Video call and screen-recording tools used for lessons and game analyses
  • Email, calendar and file storage providers
  • My payment provider and accountant

Some of these providers process data outside the UK. Where they do, they use legally approved safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

How long I keep it

  • Enquiries that don't become coaching: up to 12 months, then deleted.
  • Free-lesson email list: until you unsubscribe.
  • Student records: while you're a student, plus 12 months.
  • Payment and invoice records: 6 years, as required for UK tax purposes.

Cookies and browser storage

Visit counts. Vercel Web Analytics counts page visits and where visitors came from. It uses no cookies and doesn't identify you.

How the site is used (only with your permission). If you click “Accept” on the cookie bar, Microsoft Clarity uses cookies to record how visitors move around the site: clicks, scrolling and how far down each page people read. This helps me improve the site. It doesn't record what you type into forms. If you click “Reject”, Clarity sets no cookies. You can change your choice any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.

Browser storage. The site also saves a few small settings in your own browser so it remembers your cookie choice, that you've unlocked the free lessons, which slide you're on, and whether you've closed the sign-up pop-up.

No advertising cookies are used. If I add advertising tracking (such as the Meta Pixel), I'll update this policy and ask for your consent first.

Your rights

You can ask to see the information I hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how I use it, or get a copy to take elsewhere. Contact me using the details below and I'll respond within one month.

If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
